Much like any other project in one’s life, creating a website is one of those things that can be edited and picked at forever. This is the challenge of knowing when to pull the plug on something and just do it! Ok, that is really a Nike reference but you get what I mean. SO HERE IT GOES. This site will always be a work in progress, just like me. How often in life have I procrastinated for fear of the imperfect or the unfinished product that might cause me shame or make people to think ill of me. (Note: if you have not listened to or read any BrenĂ© Brown you might really appreciate her work.)
This is as simple as not wanting to have people see your messy house, your unfolded laundry, the dirty car console, or unwashed kids but it can also become debilitating if you let it. Looking back, one of my favorite embarrassing memories growing up on the farm was wearing an enormous zip up Carhartt suit that was belted with baling twine in order to not drag the legs. Who shows up but one of the best looking guys from school. I blushed a lot in those days. I can only imagine how red my cheeks were. I survived it and I realized I don’t think he really noticed or if he did he rightfully got a nice quiet chuckle. The story I had told myself was that he was going to go back to school and tell everyone about the ..(apply mean adjective here)… farm girl that (embarrassing details here)….. but it didn’t happen.
One of the most powerful things I learned from BrenĂ© Brown is to stop and use the phrase “the story I am telling myself is” to help me recognize when I have created this silly story that is not based in reality. Guess what, I have yet to be 100% right in the story I created. It is also a beautiful way to diffuse conflict with friends, colleagues and your life partner. My life partner… that is a story for another day.
Your life partner is a saint to put up with all of us!
Very true!
